Cloth Diapering, Day 5

We found out that Paul really dislikes wet and dirty diapers, regardless of the brand. He won't sit in them for more than 5 minutes before his whimpers escalate to piercing wails that make me think that the ceiling fan must have fallen on him or that the monsters under the bed may have started water boarding my sweet baby. This means that we go through A LOT of diapers (10-14) each day. We're currently on day 5 of cloth diapering, and it has been a success so far. If we had continued with disposables, we would be out by now. We used around 200 diapers in the 3.5 weeks since his birth. That's some serious investment. I'm surprised at how quickly Paul runs through our stash of cloth diapers. I sure hope that we've got enough to last till laundry day through his potty training days.

I'll post later on about successes/failures in cloth diapering.

  1. Hi! Random blog stalker :) I went to SVU with Brian. Anyway, I LOVE cloth diapering! I didn't start until my youngest was 6 months old, but plan on cloth diapering from the get-go with our next baby. I'd love to know what brands/styles you're using, and if they're successful! If you have any questions, too, about washing CD or anything else CD related, just let me know. I don't claim to be an expert, but I remember being so overwhelmed when I first started...

Anyway, congrats on your baby! What a blessing!

  2. I just saw your post about reasons why you're cloth diapering! Sorry to ask questions that had already been answered! You linked up to Flip diaper...holy moly, my favorite diaper EVER (when used with an organic insert)! Do they work on a newborn, though? Or are you using something else?

  3. Did Paul go thru 10-14 diapers/day when you used disposable diapers? Levi only went through about 6, I think. Now it's less (as long as he doesn't have something wrong with him)

  4. Yep. He went through more Huggies than I cared to count. He gets fussy even when they're just a tiny bit wet. Now that we're using the cloth dipes, I don't feel like we're throwing away $$ each time we change him.

Sarah, we're using prefolds and flatfolds (30-40) with 4 velcro Flip covers (and one EconoBum cover and one wool cover, as needed). The Flip has seemed to work pretty well for Paul. The biggest problem is leaking out of the sides overnight. I should double the flatfolds more often.

I wanted to know how the Flips work once baby becomes squirmy. Paul can't move much, but I've wondered if the Flips are harder to use once the baby starts trying to jump off the changing table. Thoughts?

    1. I think that velcro is the life-saver initially when babies get wiggly (6-12 months)! But I feel that the biggest flaw with the Flips is that the velcro wears out quickly (perhaps it does on other brands as well, but I have only used Flips long term), so in the long run snaps (while slower to put on) are more worth it. I tried replacing the velcro myself but I am not the best seamstress, and it did not work out very well! It can be annoying if your baby is wiggly, but honestly any diaper can be tricky with a moving baby! You get a hang of it, regardless, and eventually your little one learns that diaper time means business and they need to lay still! :)
